101 Ways to Make Money Online

Disclaimers

There's no catch and I'm not trying to sell you an ebook. Or anything (read about conmen who do). I'm not even signing you up for a newsletter. This list was put together more as a laugh. It may change your life. Or it may annoy you enormously because of its er, brevity. I hope it does both.

Some ideas here are nice and have halos, others smell of dog urine ... but all these methods allegedly generate lotso dosho, and every single one is legal at least somewhere. There's overlap in everything so some ideas may be repeated (and some may not be covered at all) but I'm still maintaining there are 101 ways to make money online, partly because it makes a good headline. No, solely because it makes a good headline. It sucked YOU in, didn't it?

No, you won't get anything for nothing but there are a lot of things you can get for nearly nothing. Like getting to pick holes in my list. Go ahead. Pick holes and then link back here to show people how stupid I am.

I've put together a lot of these ideas from thousands of hours discussing businesses for sale with their owners. They've shared with me how their businesses operate, how they make money online, how they built their businesses up etc. They've given me access to their traffic stats, their earnings and accounts and tax figures. Many even gave me access to their Adsense or other "main earner" accounts. Some of those businesses were so irresistible that I bought them. And sold them. And bought others. It's a game. I love it.

Most of these business ideas can be run from anywhere in the world, even the United States, Australia and other non-English speaking countries. For consistency sake all figures are quoted in US dollars.

Each method is summarised in a single small para so appreciate it's not the complete unabridged version. And, no, I haven't tried each one so out of the 101 business models to make money online 102 may be completely dud. But, I do intend expanding - in due course - on some of the money-making ideas that worked for me.

More disclaimers will come when people sue me (suing can make you money, see #66)

Finding business ideas:

1. Spend all day browsing Site For Sale forums (like the list we have here) for the myriad ways people earn money online. People looking to sell their sites actually tell you how they make money! Pick one that suits you. Research it a bit, and away and start your own business. Or use a search engine to find ways to make money online. It seems to be so easy that it's almost impossible to find someone who doesn't know how to do it. (But why stop at one search engine (SE)? Most people get to less than 1% of the top qualify info they're seeking because they use just one SE like Google, don't have the vaguest of ideas of the advanced search features available, and don't know the benefits to be had using specialised SEs, local SEs etc. )

2. Bundle the two above to tell other people how to make money online. They always want to know. It doesn't matter if you don't know yourself, you can still charge them for it. I obviously don't have a clue as I'm giving it all away. You can now ignore everything else I say. But don't go spending money on internet cons promising to make you a millionaire and here's how to spot them.

3. Be more inventive with your search. Look for small business franchise newsletters. Or for home jobs in your particular niche or hobby. (And check point #2 above for those specialised SEs). You can also go through the appropriate DMOZ categories (examples: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12)

But using "search" is just the start of the game. There are simply so, so many ways. We hope you hang around to find out.

4. Like the guy you can pay to stick a message in a bottle for you and throw it into the sea. He's made tens of thousands of dollars already. And there are several others like him in all parts of the world. Do you live near a sea or river? Or join the cleanup of those bottles and get your council to contribute.

Domains

5. The dot com gold rush made many millionaires but there's still plenty of money in domain real estate and still some good catches available. A good dot com may be difficult to find now. But there are a lot of gTLDs and ccTLDs from the .info to .eu to .tv to .co.in and they all present opportunities being discussed in several good forums. Put your thinking hat on, buy a famous word domain for a few dollars and put it up on the domain selling sites.

6. Lost your thinking hat? Hang out at SEDO. DNForurms, Afternics and other places where domains are bought and sold. Provided you learn enough about the market to recognise bargains you could make a living from just buying existing domains and reselling them.

7. If you're smart you'll run dictionary checks against available domain names and auto-check them against search volumes (using OST, Wordtracker etc.) for that term and Pay Per Click (PPC) rates in the major ad networks (example) to work out which ones are likely to be more profitable (how to make money with PPC). If you can pick up the domain for a profitable term that's searched for often you can use a domain parking program. Or post a little bit of relevant content and get a link or two ... and the search engines will start sending you traffic. If the phrase people are typing in coincides exactly with your domain name it gives you a great head start with SEs.

8. If you're smart AND a linguist you'd be doing that in multiple languages. And not paying for any domain till you've tried it free for five days to see if it does indeed get any type-in traffic (and how well that traffic converts). After you've tried it for five days and dropped it there's nothing to stop you immediately picking it up again for another five day trial. Strange, but true. It's not kiting, it's legal.

9. Misspellings. Massive opportunities still exist in the misspelling/typo market. People trying to get elsewhere land on your site instead ... and you sell them stuff (or use the domain parking idea). Some even tempt fate by making PPC opportunties out of typosquatting on trademarks. Finding typos has never been easier. There are many tools that will find misspellings for you. How easy can it get?

10. Domain parking and type-in traffic: People sometimes guess at URLs. If they want a plumber they may try plumber.com though they've never used that site themselves. Find terms that people may be typing in (I will provide a detailed guide to this when I get a chance), buy the domain and populate it with ads. There are several ad programs to monetise your parked domains. Or combine this with the previous idea to buy plummer.com or similar typo domains to make money online.

11. Drop catches. People sometimes forget to renew their domains and these expire. Picking them up will give you some remnant traffic from sites that link to this domain/people who've bookmarked it etc. In some cases the traffic can be pretty high. Provided you're fast enough to replace the copyrighted content that was there with something else you can make quite a profitable business from doing nothing else but this.

12. A variation on the above. Sell the domain back to the previous owners. Note that you may want to tread carefully and get familiar with the rules for that TLD before you start sending off ransom notes. For example, with ICANN (domains that end in .com, for example) the moment you send the previous owners an email saying you've got their domain and you'll give it back for $10K... you've lost. It can't look like a ransom demand. Be reasonable and read the small print of the UDRP. No UDRP required if you're sitting hostage on myspace.com/theircompanyname or the equivalent at blogger, twitter or other big destination. LOL, watch them kick themselves and sack their web advisors who told them about taking the "dot info" but omitted to mention the importance of protecting the brand by owning the associated myspace directory (and others)! And it costs you nothing!

13. Run a domain management service. Hundreds of thousands of webmasters (or more) have a large portfolio of domains. A lot of them would like the boring bit taken out of their domain management. You can run their DNSes or just a service reminding them when each domain comes up for renewal. Or an automated monitoring service to tell them when one of their domains/sites is inaccessible.

14. Start a directory to list domains for sale. That's what people like SEDO do. You can get money just for allowing domains to be listed in your directory.

15. If you're running a service putting buyers and sellers of domains/sites in touch with one another you could get money for add on services (like providing escrow facilities). For ideas have a look at what existing domain intermediaries offer.

16. Run a domain research service. Wonder what happens when a manufacturer is looking to name a new model car? Or starting a new range of clothing? They need trademark and patent research but now they also need some domain research. Which of the literally thousands of combinations and misspellings (+ sucks.com) are taken and which do they need to buy? With a few of the free domain tools discussed on this page, here, and one or two more - like free DNS tools - and a little time you could provide them a service they'd pay a lot of money for.

17. Start your own country: Whoa! yes, you're reading it right. If you've heard of Sealand (what is Sealand) you'll know that starting your own country is not that far fetched. Once you have your own WhackyCountry you can apply for a .wc (yuk) TLD. Sell millions of domains. Keep some for yourself. Ever wanted a Google.___?

Military tactics (Greek: Taktikē, the art of organizing an army) are the techniques for using weapons or military units in combination for engaging and defeating an enemy in battle. Changes in philosophy and technology over time have been reflected in changes to military tactics.

Before the nineteenth century, many military tactics were confined to battlefield concerns, such as how to best maneuver units during combat in open terrain. In current military thought, tactics are the lowest level of planning, involving small units ranging from a few dozen to a few hundred men. Units are organized into formations, comprising a higher level of planning known as the operational use of forces. The third tier of military planning is strategic, which is concerned with the overall means and plan for achieving a long-term outcome. Operational warfare is thus an intermediate level in which the aim is to convert the strategy (highest level) into tactics (lowest level of planning).#wikipedia

Defensive tactics

German defensive squad tactics stressed the importance of integration with larger plans and principles in posts scattered in depth. A Gruppe was expected to dig in at 30 to 40 meters (33-45yd) (the maximum that a squad leader could effectively oversee). Other cover such as single trees and crests were said to attract too much enemy fire and were rarely used. While digging, one member of the squad was to stand sentry. Gaps between dug-in squads may be left, but covered by fire. The placing of the machine gun was key to the German squad defence, which was given several alternative positions, usually being placed 50 meters (55yd) apart.

Pairs of soldiers were deployed in foxholes, trenches, or ditches. The pair stood close together in order to communicate with each other. The small sub-sections would be slightly separated, thus decreasing the effect of enemy fire. If the enemy did not immediately mobilize, the second stage of defense, entrenching, was employed. These trenches were constructed behind the main line where soldiers could be kept back under cover until they were needed.

The defensive firefight was conducted by the machine gun at an effective range while riflemen were concealed in their foxholes until the enemy assault. Enemy grenades falling on the squad's position were avoided by diving away from the blast or by simply throwing or kicking the grenade back. This tactic was very dangerous and U.S. sources report American soldiers losing hands and feet this way.

In the latter part of the war, emphasis was put on defense against armored vehicles. Defensive positions were built on a "tank-proof obstacle" composed of at least one anti-tank weapon as well as artillery support directed by an observer. SEAL Team One

SEAL Team ONE is based in Coronado, CA. Commanded by a Navy Commander (O-5), it has eight operational SEAL platoons and a headquarters element. SEAL Team ONE’s geographic area of concentration is Southeast Asia. SEAL Team ONE deploys platoons to Naval Special Warfare Unit ONE in Guam and conducts Deployments for Training (DFTs) throughout the Pacific and Central theaters.

History

SEAL Team One was commissioned on 1 January 1962. The majority of Team One's plankowners were drawn from the ranks of Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT) 11 and 12. Already skilled in underwater demolition and diving techniques, the men were soon sent to a wide variety of military schools in order to obtain the skills that would be required of small infantry units operating in the jungle. Having been restricted to near shore operations while with the UDTs, the SEALs would be expected to move further inland than any previous naval commando unit. This required an entirely new focus.

Almost immediately after its founding, two officers were sent to Vietnam to determine in what capacity the new force could provide both the Vietnamese and U.S. forces in-country. This month-long survey resulted in the recommendation that the naval commandos provide traning for Mobile Training Team 7. In March, this mission was expanded and two SEALs were sent for a six month tour to train Vietnamese in clandestine military operations. Shortly thereafter, SEAL Team One would join Team Two in providing a steady stream of advisors for the Mobile Training Teams (MTT). The MTTs would prove invaluable tools for instructing other Vietnamese units in the techniques of jungle warfare and related skills.

It was also at this time - around 1962-63 - that SEAL Team One personnel were detached from the Teams to serve with the Central Intelligence Agency's Special Operations Group (SOG).

SEAL Team One would continue to contribute heavily to the U.S. forces in Vietnam until the withdrawal of forces in 1975. Official Navy estimates concluded that One was responsible for 1,000 confirmed kills, and 370 probables. Additionally, three SEALs were awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions in the Vietnam War, all from Team One:

May 1975 - SEAL Team One would again be called on following the capture of the SS Mayaguez, a container vessel, off the coast of Cambodia. Delta Platoon, based in Subic Bay, Philippines, was placed on alert in the event a rescue mission was initiated.

1982 - Platoon from ST1 assisted U.S. Secret Service agents in the protection of Queen Elizabeth during the West Coast portion of her tour in the United States.

The F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, twin-engine, variable sweep wing, two-place fighter designed to attack and destroy enemy aircraft at night and in all weather conditions.

The F-14 can track up to 24 targets simultaneously with its advanced weapons control system and attack six with Phoenix AIM-54A missiles while continuing to scan the airspace. Armament also includes a mix of other air intercept missiles, rockets and bombs.

The Grumman F-14, the world's premier air defense fighter, was designed to replace the F-4 Phantom II fighter (phased out in 1986). F-14s provided air cover for the joint strike on Libyan terrorist targets in 1986. The F-14A was introduced in the mid-1970s. Designed in the late 1950s, the A-6 is an all-weather long-range carrierborne attack aircraft able to operate by day or night. The first of six YA-2F1 prototypes flew on April 19, 1960 with the first of 482 production A-6As being delivered to the US Navy beginning in 1963. The Intruder played a large role in the Vietnam war, flying over 35,000 combat sorties by 1973.

The definitive version is the A-6E which includes an APQ-148 multi-mode Doppler radar with terrain mapping and track-while-scan capabilities. Included beneath the nose radome is a laser spot tracker and laser ranger and designator. All A-6Es in service are due to be retired by the year 2000.

Duduk, diam, dapat duit (4-D). Begitulah kalimat yang sering diidentikkan dengan para pelaku bisnis online, entah apa pun bisnis yang dia jalankan.

Hmm…. enak betul ya kalau hanya duduk dan diam kita bisa dapat duit — dalam jumlah banyak lagi! Tapi apakah kenyataannya seperti itu?

Jawabnya ... ???

Duduk, diam, dapat duit (4-D). Begitulah kalimat yang sering diidentikkan dengan para pelaku bisnis online, entah apa pun bisnis yang dia jalankan.

Hmm…. enak betul ya kalau hanya duduk dan diam kita bisa dapat duit — dalam jumlah banyak lagi! Tapi apakah kenyataannya seperti itu?

Jawabnya : tidak.

Faktanya, slogan 4-D itu sama sekali tidak bisa berlaku. Semua butuh proses, semua butuh pengorbanan, dan semua butuh kesabaran. Dan hasil yang akan Anda dapat sesuai apa yang Anda keluarkan — that’s the golden rule of life. Jadi mau tidak mau kita harus bekerja keras untuk bisa berhasil dalam bisnis online. Apapun tipe bisnis yang kita geluti.

Faktanya adalah bisnis online tidak jauh beda dengan bisnis di dunia nyata : ada banyak hal yang harus Anda lakukan untuk bisa sukses dalam dunia bisnis online.

Jika Anda seorang ads publisher, Anda harus memperhatikan traffik situs Anda, Anda harus memperhatikan click-through iklan Anda, Anda harus memperhatikan demografi visitor situs bisnis Anda, dan sebagainya.

Tidak selalu mudah untuk berbisnis online, walau juga tidak selalu susah. Yang jelas perlu usaha yang cukup keras untuk bisa maju dan sukses, tidak bisa hanya duduk dan diam lalu menunggu uang mengalir ke rekening Anda.

Jika Anda seorang internet marketer, Anda harus memperhatikan sales copy situs Anda, memperhatikan performa list building situs Anda, memperhatikan performa autoresponder-open-rate dari newsletter Anda, dan sebagainya.

Jika Anda seorang paid reviewer, maka Anda harus begini begitu. Jika Anda pemilik jasa web hosting, maka Anda harus begini begitu. Daaaaaaan seterusnya.

Jadi kalau Anda selalu membayangkan bahwa dengan berbisnis online Anda bisa duduk-diam-dapat-duit, sebaiknya Anda berhenti berkhayal sekarang juga, :-)

Jangan malas untuk bekerja, jangan bosan untuk berusaha. Yakinlah bahwa semua yang Anda lakukan akan mendapatkan hasil yang menyenangkan. Semua usaha yang Anda lakukan akan menghasilkan uang yang lebih banyak lagi pada masa panen tiba.

Ingat hukum kehidupan : semua ada harganya. Dan jika Anda mau membayar mahal, maka Anda bisa mendapatkan barang yang bagus. Harga nggak bohong, begitu kalau kata orang.

Bagaimana dengan saya sendiri, kok enak banget sehari-hari cuman kerja dari rumah tapi bisa dapat income besar? Itu kan kayak enggak kerja?

Ups jangan salah. Sekedar info, saat ini saya bisa meraih income dari bisnis online sekitar 10 juta rupiah per bulannya itu semua adalah hasil dari sebuah perjuangan yang tidak mudah.

Saya meluangkan ratusan jam untuk belajar kesana-kemari. Saya mengeluarkan ratusan dollar untuk membeli berbagai buku panduan yang berkualitas tinggi + layanan pembantu online business yang saya butuhkan. Saya bahkan ngutang pakai kartu kredit orang demi membeli layanan + buku panduan tersebut.

Saya meluangkan 3-4 jam sehari untuk berbisnis online sepulang kuliah (sisa setahun lagi). Saya bangun sebelum orang lain bangun, saya tidur setelah orang lain tidur. Apakah itu bukan sebuah perjuangan? Apakah itu bukan sebuah “kerja”?

Tapi walau begitu saya tidak merasa merugi. Income sekitar 10 juta rupiah / bulan dari berbagai bisnis online saya rasa cukup berharga untuk membayar semua kerja keras saya itu.

Sebuah perjuangan yang lumayan melelahkan, tapi hasilnya sangat membahagiakan :-) — setidaknya saya merasa sangat bahagia bisa dapat segitu, walau mungkin kecil nilainya bagi sebagian Anda.

Bisnis online memang secara umum mudah, tapi bukan berarti bisa kita jalankan asal-asalan. Sama seperti bisnis di dunia nyata, Anda perlu meluangkan waktu dan tenaga untuk mendapatkan hasil yang baik. Hasilnya, sekali lagi, sebanding dengan kerja keras Anda.

Berdasar pengalaman saya & client-client saya di uangpanas.com, kalau Anda hanya mau meluangkan waktu 1-2 jam sehari menjalankannya, Anda bisa mendapat untung Rp 100.000 - 300.000 dalam sehari berbisnis online. Tapi kalau Anda meluangkan waktu lebih banyak lagi, misal 4-5 jam sehari untuk berbisnis online, Anda bisa mendapat Rp 500.000-1.000.000 per harinya.

Jadi, sekali lagi, semakin besar usaha Anda, semakin besar pula yang bisa Anda raih :-)

Jadi bagi Anda yang merasa tertarik di bisnis online, bersiaplah untuk bekerja keras juga. No pain == no gain. Jangan mudah menyerah, jangan mudah merasa putus asa. Teruslah berusaha untuk maju. Jalan tidak selalu mudah, tapi untuk mendatangi tujuan Anda, selalu ada jalan.
